I've started with robotics during my studies in University of Parma. My experiences was about the developing of mobile autonomous agents.
The hardware platform was a custom version of the classic M.I.T. 6270 Lego Robot system, designed by Dr. Keith L. Doty and Scott Jantz of the Machine Intelligence Laboratory of Florida.
Software developing was based on a two weeks course by Dr. Keith L. Doty, and was focused on his theory about a sensory-driven behavior-based mobile platform.
The robot developed by my team was able to perform navigation tasks and sound, light and smell recognition.
With the robot, named Scipione, my team partecipated twice to the ArtLab competition and got the 4th (1995) and 3rd place (1996).
Other interesting lab activities concerned artificial vision projects based on Nomadics NOMAD 200 robot, custom hardware solutions and simulations with our Thinking Machines CM-2.
Now I'm thinking about developing my own mini robot, maybe a PIC based one, like my Monty robot (a DIY kit), or B.E.A.M. robot.
